Chennai Express is a 2013 Indian romantic action comedy film directed by Rohit Shetty, and produced by Gauri Khan for Red Chillies Entertainment. The film features Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in lead roles; it is the second collaboration between Khan and Padukone after Om Shanti Om (2007). The film is about a man’s journey from Mumbai to Rameshwaram, and what happens along the way after he falls in love with the daughter of a local don.
Rahul Mithaiwala (Shah Rukh Khan) is a rich forty-year-old bachelor living in Mumbai. His parents died in a car accident when he was eight years old, so his grandparents raised him. Rahul’s grandfather (Lekh Tandon) owns a chain of confectionery shops. Before his grandfather’s 100th birthday celebration, two of Rahul’s friends invite him to accompany them on a vacation in Goa, which he accepts. Rahul’s grandfather dies on the eve of the celebration. Chennai Express is Rahul’s trip as he embarks on a journey to distribute his grandfather’s ashes in Ganga and Rameswaram.
A chance encounter leads him to trouble with Deepika Padukone and her gangster father.
The movie has its tone in comedy and action. It is Rohit Shetty’s brand of film making that makes this a pleasurable and rib tickling laugh ride. Deepika Padukone sizzles with her south Indian accent throughout the movie. She stands shoulder to shoulder with Shah Rukh Khan when it comes to comedy. Shah Rukh has always been known for his comic timing. He returns to comedy after a long time with Chennai Express.
The movie has beautiful moments of romance between the two protagonists. There is love, laughter and action in this light, breezy family movie.
