Dil Se is a 1998 Indian war romantic thriller film in the backdrop of insurgency in Northeast India, written and directed by Mani Ratnam, and produced by Mani Ratnam, Ram Gopal Varma, and Shekhar Kapur. The film stars Shahrukh Khan and Manisha Koirala in lead roles while Preity Zinta (in her film debut) appears in a supporting role. Mani Ratnam also co-wrote the screenplay for the film with Tigmanshu Dhulia. It is the third in Ratnam’s trilogy of terror films after Roja and Bombay.

The film was screened at the Era New Horizons Film Festival and the Helsinki International Film Festival. Noted for its non linear screenplay, the film won awards for cinematography, audiography, choreography, and music, among others. The film was a success overseas becoming the first Indian film to enter the top 10 in the United Kingdom box office charts. The film won two National Film Awards, and six Filmfare Awards.

    Dil Se (From the Heart) is a romantic thriller, written and directed by Mani Ratnam, produced by Mani Ratnam, Ram Gopal Varma, and Shikar Kapoor, released in 1998 against the background of the insurgency in northeastern India, the third part of the horror trilogy Roja and Bombay , Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Manisha Koirala, and star Britti Zinta in her first appearance.

    The story of the movie
    The film revolves around Ammar Kent Farma, a journalist, broadcaster and radio programmer on Radio India, who decides to go all the way to India to find an answer to a single question (what did India achieve after 50 years of independence?), Even succeeding in getting some insurgents who are terrorizing the country To ask them the same question at great risk, he is a bold young man who believes in his homeland and wants to improve his condition. On his journey he meets Megna by chance, to fall in love with her at first sight, but she leaves him and walk without knowing anything about her.
    Ammar completes his quest for the answer, meets Magna again and runs away from him, but he follows her and tries to convince her to escape with him and marry him, but she tells her brothers who beat him violently and leave him to die.
    During the events preparations are underway for the army to celebrate India’s 50th Independence Day in the presence of the President. During Ammar’s coverage of some of the festivities, he meets Megna again and follows her. Megna tells the police that Ammar is her husband to hide from the eyes of the police, which raises Ammar’s suspicions about her motives. Their car crashes in the middle of the desert, For two days together Ammar tries to get closer to Megna but she stops him and escapes him again.
    At this point, we realize that Megna is a member of a terrorist group and that her group is planning a major operation on the day of the celebration, while Ammar (who has not yet realized it) feels very angry but tries to get back to his normal life and agrees to marry the first girl exposed by his mother, which is Britti, which plays the star Britti Zenita in her first film roles.
    During the preparations for the engagement ceremony of Ammar and Britti, Megna shows up again to ask Ammar for a place and a radio job, without asking her about anything he agrees, and while preparing for his marriage, he tries to persuade Megna to escape with him and marry him to no avail.
    When one of the members of Megna’s group is arrested and begins to search for the rest, a woman appears to testify that Ammar has links to the terrorists. He is interrogated and released, and he is aware that it has to do with Magna and decides to stop her.
    Ammar presses Megna to tell him the suffering of her people and the injustice of the Indian government to them, and their desire for independence, sympathize with her and ask her again to marry him but she refuses and insists on her position, in the meantime the police reach the house of Ammar and detain his mother thinking of being involved with terrorists, while the terrorists capture Ammar and try to kill him but he escapes them after he gets hurt and goes to his home to try to prevent Megna, Britti tells him that she heard a phone call in which to identify the location of Megna, the police arrive first to arrest Ammar and escape from them, and after many obstacles reach Megna wearing an explosive belt to blow herself up amid the celebration to kill the President, and tries to convince her again to leave all this and escape with him, and when she refuses he decides to die with her and embrace the explosive belt explodes and kills them together, and the celebration of the 50th anniversary of India’s independence in peace.

    Reactions to the film
    The film has a 7.8 rating on the IMDb website, but when it was shown it received negative reactions in India, because it shows the human side in the terrorists and tries to show the basic problems inside India, but it was a dazzling success outside India. The film was screened at the New Horizons Festival in Poland and the Helsinki International Film Festival in Finland. The film won the NBC Award at the Berlin International Film Festival, the National Film Awards and the Six Filmfer Awards. It was also the first Indian film to enter the top ten at the box office in Britain, and continued in English cinemas for more than two months on five screens with a rate of 3000 spectators per day per screen. Its revenues were $ 975,000 in the United States and £ 537,930 in Britain.
    The film is said to be Bollywood’s first film dealing with the seven shades of love: attraction, fascination, love, reverence, worship, obsession, and death.
    The film has been filmed in different parts of India, such as: Himachal, Les, Assam, New Delhi, Kerala, and Bhutan. Chaiyya Chaiyya was also filmed above the Nigiri Express train, on the road between Uti, Connor and Kotagiri. Satarangi Ri was also photographed near Thaks Monastery, the ruins of the Basago Monastery, and Lake Pangong near Pangong Tsu in Ladakh.
